Full Story:
They said she couldn’t. She did anyway.
Born in a remote village in Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh, Killi Kavitha’s story is one of quiet defiance. A medical error in early childhood—expired polio drops—left her with a disability that made even standing a challenge. But from the beginning, Kavitha’s life has never been about what she couldn’t do. It’s been about everything she did, anyway.
Her earliest champion was her mother. “She never let me think I was less than anyone,” Kavitha says. Education became her passion, her escape, and her purpose. Each day, she would walk 5 kilometers—navigating hilly terrain, crossing railway tracks, and braving monsoon rains—just to catch a bus to school. There were no proper roads. No ramps. But Kavitha never asked for sympathy. She just kept going.
The odds were never kind. Society often wasn’t either. She faced ridicule from neighbors and even relatives. At one point, the emotional toll became too much. She left and began living independently—a bold move for a young woman, more so with a disability, in a conservative setting.
Her determination began to bear fruit. Kavitha excelled at school, especially in academics and quiz competitions. A well-wisher gifted her a tricycle—her first taste of mobility freedom—which helped her complete her degree and pursue computer training. Her academic record won her a free MBA seat at Sri Venkateshwara University in Tirupati, where she specialized in finance.
Post-MBA, she worked in data and finance roles across several companies. But opportunities were limited. Many roles, especially in sales, demanded physical mobility she couldn’t manage. Freelance work followed—but so did stagnation.
Then came Youth4Jobs.
Their two-month training program helped Kavitha not just gain new skills, but something even more powerful—confidence. It led her to HSBC. And that’s where she found her footing.
Today, Kavitha is an Assistant Manager, Quality Control at HSBC, drawing an annual salary of ₹7.8 lakhs. She was even awarded Best Employee of the Year—a moment of quiet victory for someone once denied a job offer to her face because of her disability.
That rejection didn’t break her. It lit a fire.
“I don’t want to depend on anyone—I want to be happy, independent, and help others,” she says.
Now financially stable and emotionally unshakable, Kavitha dreams of mentoring others like her. Her story is a reminder that disability is not inability—and that with the right mindset and opportunity, the girl who once walked along railway tracks to school can one day rise to lead in a global bank.
